Items To Install In Your Home That Save You Money

Items To Install In Your Home That Save You MoneyIf there is one thing for certain in home ownership it is that costs will always go up. Unlike renters homeowners have property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, lawn care, and various housing repairs to keep on top of. Keeping costs down can be a difficult challenge. Houses are expensive, but there are things you can install that will help save you money.

Improve Your Lighting

High power bills are a serious drain on your budget. The federal government has already been mandating changes to more energy efficient fluorescent lightbulbs, but if the color & frequency of fluorescent lighting leaves you uneasy, look into LED lighting. The costs are coming down making them a much more affordable investment than years before, and they last much longer than any domestic lighting options available. Motion sensors can also be installed to turn off lights when they detect people are no longer in the room. These sensors aren’t very expensive and can save you money in the long run. At the very least, consider installing dimmer switches to only provide as much light as you need at night.

Smart Thermostats

Programmable thermostats help you regulate your home environment by adjusting for high and low activity periods. Now you don’t have to worry about remembering to adjust the thermostat when you leave for work or vacation. Companies like Trane, Lennox, and Honeywell have been expanding their product lines to help address the needs of the modern homeowner. They adjust for Daylight Savings, offer vacation features, allow for scheduling, and can even be adjusted over the phone. A thermostat like the one designed by Nest can do all that and more. Its motion and light sensors sense when people are in the room or if it’s a cloudy day and adjust the temperature accordingly, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars every year.

Install Energy Star Qualified Equipment

If your HVAC gear is over ten years old, it may be worth looking into upgrading. Not only are there often financial incentives from utility and insurance companies to upgrade your equipment, but the savings over the life of your home can be in the hundreds. Since HVAC gear can be expensive, it is important not to replace it just to replace it. For instance, if you know you will be moving in a few years, the cost of replacing HVAC equipment may not be worth it for you over a short period of time.

Solar Panels

Solar Panels are a considerable investment, but if your roof sees a lot of sunshine—depending on where you live—you could end up saving money over the life of your house. State and city rebate programs, Federal tax credits, and other solar incentive programs can reduce installation costs by up to 40%.

Insulate Your Windows with Earth-friendly and Efficient Technology

Installing polywood indoor shutters in your home can help provide multiple benefits, especially if you install glass doors and bay windows to allow for more sunlight in your home. Polywood shutters are a fire resistant, recyclable wood substitute that provide insulation which prevents outside temperature conditions from affecting your home environment while still allowing the sun to help reduce your lighting costs during the day. They look great, too. They also save on HVAC costs because they are more efficient than traditional wooden or aluminum mini-blinds.

The traditional tips to replace your roof, insulation, or siding in order to cut down on utility costs are still wonderful ideas. Technology, however, has brought new ideas to the table for eager homeowners willing to invest in their future. Carefully investigate each option and see which is right for you and your household budget.

About

Did you know today marks the birth and the death of William Shakespeare, the world's greatest playwright? We say there's no better way to celebrate the Bard's 450th birthday than by revisiting his most famous works. So if you haven't picked up Shakespeare since high school English class (guilty), it's time to reacquaint yourself with that iambic pentameter.

Who Was William Shakespeare?

What's Your Favorite Shakespeare Play?
Whether you're into tragedies or comedies, Shakespeare has a play to suit any mood. How many of his classics have you read?

How to Speak Like Shakespeare
All those "wherefores" and "arts" and "thous" might leave you scratching your head, wondering what it even means. It's true, Shakespeare's language is all his own, so if you're having trouble following along, "give us leave to" help.

Celebrate at the Bard's Old Stomping Grounds
There's still plenty of the 450th year of Shakespeare to book a trip to Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon or some of his other significant stomping grounds:

The New York Auto Show is now open to the public. This is the last major show of what we consider to be the major season, and this year it's a good one, with few concept cars but well over a dozen new and redesigned production vehicles. Check out my photo gallery from the show.

Second impressions: Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost
Earlier this year I got a preview drive of Ford's new EcoBoost powered Fiesta -- the version with a miniscule 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine boosted by a turbocharger. I've just spent a full week with the car. My full review is pending, but meanwhile check out my initial -- well, second-from-initial -- impressions.

About Today: Prep Your Basket for National Picnic Day

If you can't see this email, click here

About

Well, first things first. Today is Earth Day, a time to reflect upon and celebrate the natural wonder all around us. And what's one lovely way to do just that? With a traditional spring picnic, just in time for Wednesday's National Picnic Day. Here's what to pack when you head out for some sunshine, dining, and reclining on your local grassy knoll.

The Perfect Sandwich
Well, that headline might be a trick; there are many, many perfect sandwiches in this world, and virtually all of them are suitable for a picnic. Start with some cute cucumber tea sandwiches or a veggie-packed Greek feta wrap for satisfying, hand-held meals that won't leave you feeling too weighed down for a game of Frisbee.

Potato Salad, Please
What would a picnic be without a pint of potato salad? (Sorry for all of that alliteration; it just came naturally.) Yes, this mayo-centric dish has gotten a makeover from many of our Experts; we've got a bacon-buffalo version, a vegan edition, and way, way more!

The Sweet Stuff
A basket of fresh strawberries usually makes the perfect dessert for a picnic, but sometimes we want something a little naughtier. Like, for example, a decadent Marshmallow Brownie Sandwich Cookie or a cup of Chocolate Coconut Milk Pudding. What can we say? We've got a serious sweet tooth.

Add a Little Romance
This wouldn't perchance be a picnic for two, would it? Because our Cooking For Two Expert has hundreds of recipes that are totally picnic-ready, such as these Chimichurri Steak Tacos with Pico de Gallo or this fresh and delicious Grapefruit and Avocado Salad. And why not pack a bottle of Champagne to set the mood?
